Wildcard Certificates enable the encryption of unlimited subdomains (correctly referred to as "Third-Level Domains", e.g., "www.domain.com", "shop.domain.com", "internal.domain.com") with just one certificate. With the same encryption strength, wildcard certificates offer a cost-effective alternative to purchasing multiple individual certificates. For validation, you can choose between simple domain-validated and organization-validated options.

Why Are There No EV Wildcard Certificates?

EV imposes the highest requirements on the certificate being verified; the protected domain names and the domain owner must be established at the time of verification. However, this is not the case with wildcard certificates: The wildcard entry allows for an unlimited number of subdomains beneath the primary domain to be included in the certificate even after it has been issued. Therefore, an EV classification for wildcard certificates is not possible.
