Timestamping Service

The Timestamping Service is a digital service used to cryptographically prove the exact time of a specific action or document. It is commonly used in legal, business, and technical contexts to ensure the integrity and authenticity of data.

The timestamp service from SwissSign enables businesses to ensure the legal validity and compliance of their electronic documents. Using timestamps, the existence of electronic data and documents at a specific point in time, as well as their integrity, can be proven. SwissSign is certified as an officially recognized provider of certification services under the Swiss Signature Act (ZertES) and operates as a "Time Stamp Authority" (TSA). As a result, SwissSign is able to issue "Qualified Timestamps". The timestamp services are based on international standards such as RFC 3161 (Internet X.509 Public Key Infrastructure Time-Stamp Protocol) and also comply with country-specific legal requirements.

  3. Qualified Electronic Signature (QES): In Switzerland, a QES is legally equivalent to a handwritten signature, but only if it is supplemented by a qualified timestamp. This ensures that the signature was made at a time when the underlying qualified certificate was valid.
