Email Signature Certificates

Emails are sent in plain text by mail programs. At each of the numerous nodes along their path to the recipient, someone could read or even alter this email, distorting its meaning. Email signature certificates, known as S/MIME certificates, provide protection here. S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) certificates are used to enhance the security of emails by enabling sender authentication and message encryption.

An S/MIME certificate contains information about the certificate holder, such as their name and email address, as well as a public key used for encrypting messages and verifying signatures. It is issued by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA) that has verified the identity of the certificate holder.

To send an encrypted email, the sender must use the recipient's S/MIME certificate to encrypt the email. The recipient can then decrypt the email with their private key. To send a signed email, the sender signs the email with their private key, and the recipient can verify the signature using the sender's public key. S/MIME certificates are especially useful for companies or organizations that need to exchange confidential information via email. They provide an additional layer of protection to ensure that only authorized individuals have access to sensitive information.

S/MIME certificates are available in different classifications—from simple validation to comprehensive authentication of entire organizations. There is no standard classification, but certain standards (Class 1, Class 2, Class 3) have emerged over time as generally recognized.
